A lot of the chain grocery stores in my area were closing down and a lot of International markets and off-brand grocery stores were opening. I was soooooo mad because I have to travel further to get to the chain grocery stores. I like certain brands and those off-brand grocery stores do not sell some of my favorite brands, especially Heinz ketchup. I am not willing to compromise on my Heniz.
One day I was in a rush and stopped at the Aldi near my house, which used to be Giant Food, I walked in the store and could not recognize 98% of the brands on the shelf. I went to pick up a pack of chicken for my mother. There was ONLY ONE pack of meat on the shelf. One. Uno. NO CHICKEN IN SIGHT…what store does not have chicken besides a vegan store. So I left and never intended to return to Aldi.
A few months later, I decided to stop at Aldi to pick up some tomatoes and cucumbers for my mother. I grabbed two cucumbers, two packs of tomatoes, and a bag of oranges because they were $1.99. Great price for a 5lb bag of oranges. When I got to the cash register, I proceeded to put my items on the belt and noticed that the tomatoes were MOLDED. Covered with WHITE MOLD on the bottom! I asked my niece to go get me two more packs, they too were MOLDED!!! I made up my mind that would be my last time shopping at Aldi.
My cousin started working at Aldi towards the end of 2015 and through her orientation she learned that Aldi is a German company and they sell German brands. She had the chance to sample some of the “off-brand” groceries and said that they were actually really tasty. I told her about my previous experiences with the store and she stated they receive inventory 5 days a week and they are supposed to put fresh produce out when they get them. I drove past an Aldi on Monday and decided to try them out AGAIN!!! I FELL IN LOVE WITH THE PRICES!!!
I was very skeptical and looked at EVERYTHING with a fine tooth comb. I got a 10lb bag of potatoes for $3, a cantaloupe for $0.99, ham steak for $1.50 or less (they were discounted $2 off each pack), a pack of chicken wings for $3 (usually $6 or $7 at Safeway), bag of ORGANIC kale for $2.79, 1 5lb bag of oranges for $2, 1 5lb bag of apples for $1.79, and a few other items. My total was $25 for 15 items. Everything was FRESH!!!
There are never really coupons for fresh produce and meats, so I will be shopping for those items at Aldi from here on out!!! I will try some of the store brands in the future. I wish Aldi accepted coupons because that would be my favorite place to coupon.
